Resistant, lightweight and sustainable, corrugated cardboard is a great ally for communication, packaging production, point-of-sale and interior decoration, offering smart, original and cost-effective solutions.
Depending on its thickness, internal structure and the number of 'waves', it can be used to obtain an ever-widening variety of applications. Furthermore, honeycomb cardboard, thanks to its structure, allows this material to withstand loads that are unthinkable for a material like cardboard, thus making it suitable for packaging and shipping also fragile and heavy goods. It is even used for the production of automotive platforms, which are capable of bearing the weight of a car. Another plus offered by corrugated cardboard is its great printability, both with the use of traditional technologies and with the latest digital printing systems. Many technology manufacturers are offering pre-print (to print the so-called covers, namely sheets of paper that are subsequently matched with corrugated cardboard) or post-print systems (to print directly on the cardboard already equipped with a cover, which is the outermost part of corrugated cardboard).
This incredible versatility, combined with the recyclability properties of the material, have allowed corrugated cardboard to conquer an ever-increasing range of application areas. Italy ranks as the second largest producer in Europe, boasting leading market players in terms of research and development, as well as of patents and eco-sustainability records, both among manufacturers and printers of corrugated cardboard.
These are some examples of current applications of this material. First and foremost, packaging, which ranges from the most basic pizza boxes to baskets, trays, crates for food and protective packs for beverages, up to creative die-cut and shelf-ready pack solutions that can be transformed into point-of-sale displays. Fully customisable counter and floor displays, stands, desks, totems and display walls are also practical and easily disposable solutions for product display and in-store marketing. But that's not all: once again in the retail sector, but also in hotels, offices, museums and even in private homes, entire furnishings and fittings can be created out of cardboard, including accessories, lamps and furniture. To support creativity both in the paper-making and printing industry, corrugated cardboard has also entered the luxury and art sectors as a premium material.
